We Like So Totally ROCKED!
Wop and Kirk with two of the groupies who
insisted on getting on stage with them
at their Saturday night gig...
Abbalition is accepting offers for gigs now.
Hope everyone had a safe and thoroughly satisfying Labor Day Weekend! I played a gig with Kirk F***** Saturday night. Well, it was HALF a gig as we played during the set breaks for the actual PAID duet that was playing that night. It was nice of them to let us unload on the unsuspecting group that was present.
Of course, I didn't count on having to compete against "God's team" during the first set. See, Notre Dame was playing Pitt on one of the large screen TV's that make up the wall behind the "stage" where the bands play. It's a bit disconcerting hearing cheers in the middle of a song... and we had to limit ourselves to the PG material we both knew as there were some young kids in the sports bar where we played...
How does one compete against "God's team"? Well, we did our best to simply stay out of the line of sight of God's Fans as they watched the game. Even God's Fans can get pretty unpleasant when
- a) full of alcohol and
- b) things aren't going God's way.
Well, in keeping to the PG theme, we didn't play any Tenacious D covers... we also didn't play "Men are A$holes" or "Vaseline" - not the one you might know, but a parody of Bush's "Glycerine" that I wrote about the viscous lubricating jelly substance and being a "back door" buddy. And we certainly couldn't play my 20 minute epic known only as "The Nympho Song". Actually, there is a fairly sizable list of songs we had to toss out on the first set just because of God's Underage Fans...
Still, it was a good time and, while my voice was ragged as all hell, I can't think of a time when I played lead as well as I did Saturday night. I'm not boasting - I was actually pretty surprised at how well I think I played, and how tight our vocals were and how well we read off each other for song changes and the rest. I'm sure that was in large part due to Kirk - he's got a ton of experience with that whole national tour thing... I think we may have actually annoyed one of the other 2 guys (one of the two who were actually getting paid to play) because we really did throw it down... but I could be wrong. Hope not... I was just really happy to be playing out some more.
Anyway, some "talent scout" for a local country club got our number for some upcoming weekend PAYING gigs that they like to have, and he apparently has some clout... so we must have not completely sucked.
Now, here are the order of thoughts I had when I heard this guy worked for a country club:
- hey, a paying gig
- jeez... a lot of old farts in plaid pants want to hear US?
- hey, a paying gig
- You know what? Them old farts have debutante daughters... and shloads-o-money
- Can you say, private parties?
- Can you say, private parties for rich girls with nothing better to do?
- Can you say, I think I might just get into trouble?
Of course, I might be overreaching just a bit, but I can dream, can't I?
4 Smack Me:
Heehee! Glad to hear ya rocked it out! There is the 'rock star' syndrome that comes along with playing an instrument and singing on stage...so you might get into trouble yet!
And paying gigs are always great. I did weddings a la 'wedding singer' last summer and it was a kick ass time.
Wow! Looks like you had a fabulous weekend. And if you get the payed gigs then hey, you're half way to the big time Wop!! More 'gig' pics!!
P.S. this is my word verification: zarfrbid! I think it's my favorite so far. You can almost say it...kind of? well, you can try, it just sounds funny ;O) - I think I'm delirious! good night
Don't we just look great in the jumpsuits? ;)
Wedding singers rock! And that might be our next gig... who knows?
